George Tsao, Ph.D.

Professor George Tsao received his undergraduate training at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). After graduation, he received a Shell Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies in the UK and completed his Ph.D. training at the University of London’s Institute of Cancer Research—Royal Marsden Hospital. After postgraduate training, he joined CUHK’s Department of Anatomy as a faculty member. 

In 1987, he went to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard Medical School (HMS) to receive postdoctoral training in cell and molecular biology. Subsequently, he became the Laboratory Director of the Gynecological Oncology Division of Brigham and Women Hospital and Assistant Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at HMS. In 1993, he returned to Hong Kong to pursue his long-term interests in the study of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a field within which he is an authority. Professor Tsao is currently a faculty member within the University of Hong Kong’s Department of Anatomy and the Director of the school’s Center for Cancer Research.

Professor Tsao’s research interests are mainly focused on mechanisms in cell immortalization and malignant transformation. Specifically, he is interested in the immortalization and transformation properties of Epstein-Barr virus in nasopharyngeal epithelial cells and cancer. Professor Tsao has been a member of the Governing Board of the International Association for Research on Epstein-Barr Virus and Associated Diseases.
